Grateful Duck Thoughts

Hey Duck Fans!  Welcome to the Grateful Duck Zone. I will use this space to deliver my thoughts about life in
Eugene as an Oregon Duck fan.  I attend most of the home football and basketball games, and love to discuss the
Ducks. I run a business here in Eugene, and while I did not attend the University Of Oregon, I work with the athletic
department and have adopted the Ducks as my own.

It looks like we have assembled a pretty good team this year, although I am not going  crazy yet. I have seen too
many 4-0 starts turn sour.  But this team seems to focus only on the team scheduled for the next Saturday.  That
was evident last weekend when Oregon blocked out all the hype from the Michigan win and their entry into the polls
as a ranked team, to throttle The Fresno State Bulldogs.  That ability to focus and not look past an opponent will
surely be tested Saturday night against Stanford.  Oregon is a 17 point favorite on the road, and should win by 30,
but only if the California Bears are stuck in a small corner of our Ducks' minds. I am sure coach Belotti is warning
his team about the trouble Stanford has caused Oregon in the past, and what a trap game this could be. I believe
coach will have the team ready to play, and the Ducks will score a resounding victory.

That victory, along with a Cal win at Arizona, would set up a very special Saturday in Eugene the following
weekend.  The rumor around Eugene is that ESPN will send the College Gameday crew out here for the game.
There is no more attractive game on the schedule that weekend, so unless the East coast bias strikes again, we
should get some great press coverage for The best football  stadium in America!

That is all for now.  I will try to update this space after each game. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. See you at
the game!

Grateful Duck Thoughts

The 2007 Oregon Ducks are for real.  They proved it Saturday night in Palo alto.  We knew the offense was great.
We knew the defense could hold its own too.  Saturday night this Oregon Ducks football team proved it could
overcome adversity.  The second quarter against Stanford was one of the worst I have seen Oregon  play.
Flashbacks of the last game Oregon played in the Bay area were bouncing around my head.  That game against
California was the beginning of a horrific slide that ended with an embarrassing bowl loss to BYU.  But this Oregon
team went from up 21-3 when the 2nd quarter started, to down 31-24 at halftime, and finished with a final score of
55-31.   That is a 31-0 second half score for Oregon!  Instead of giving up and losing all confidence, which the
Ducks seemed to do last year, Oregon, and especially Dennis Dixon, came out on fire in the second half.   The
maturity Dixon showed not only moved his name a few notches up the Heisman watch list, but also up the NFL
scouts draft boards.

Now Oregon can think about Cal. Coach Bellotti will have a difficult task ahead this week in trying to keep his team
focused.  Gameday will be in town. Backs will be slapped and praise thrown the players direction all over campus
this week.  I think this team can handle the hype and take care of business at the best stadium in the country this
Saturday.  Oregon41 CAL 34.

GRATEFUL DUCK  THOUGHTS

THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PLAYED ONE OF THE BEST AND MOST ENTERTAINING
FOOTBALL GAMES OF THE YEAR SATURDAY AT AUTZEN STADIUM..  THAT MAY SEEM LIKE AN OBVIOUS STATEMENT, BUT IF
YOU DID NOT KNOW THE GAME WAS SCHEDULED TO BE PLAYED IN EUGENE, ONE MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT THE STADIUM
WAS RENTED OUT FOR A ROCK CONCERT.  I HAVE NOT SEEN A MORE FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE FOR A SPORTING EVENT IN
ALL OF MY LIFE.  WANDERING THROUGH THE PARKING LOTS BEFORE THE GAME BEGAN, I WAS REMINDED OF A 3 DAY
WEEKEND DURING THE
SUMMER OF 1994. ON THAT WEEKEND, THE GRATEFUL DEAD PLAYED CONCERTS FRIDAY,
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY IN AUTZEN.  THE LOTS ALL AROUND THE STADIUM WERE CONVERTED TO A SMALL CITY OF TENTS
AND RV'S, IN A FASHION SIMILAR TO THE WAY THE FOOTBALL GAME TAILGATERS SETUP.

ESPN'S GAMEDAY HAD  EUGENE BUZZING ALL WEEK.  SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 5 AND 7 THOUSAND FANS CONVERGED ON
THE FORMERLY EMPTY LOT SOUTH OF AUTZEN BY 7 A.M. SATURDAY FOR A CHANCE TO BE ON TELEVISION.  THERE WAS SO
MUCH TO DO AND SEE ALL AROUND THE STADIUM SATURDAY MORNING THAT IT JUST SEEMED LIKE A BONUS THAT WE GOT
TO SEE A FOOTBALL GAME BETWEEN 2 TOP TEN TEAMS TOO!

THIS GAME LIVED UP TO THE HYPE!  DEFENSE WAS ON DISPLAY IN THE FIRST HALF, AND AN OFFENSIVE SHOWDOWN
PLAYED OUT IN THE SECOND.  CALIFORNIA WAS THE BETTER TEAM THAT DAY. THEY HAD TO BE BETTER IN ORDER TO
OVERCOME THE AUTZEN STADIUM CROWD.  OREGON LOST THE GAME BY TURNING THE BALL OVER 4 TIMES, WHILE THE
BETTER TEAM THAT DAY HELD ON TO THE BALL FOR THE ENTIRE GAME.

THE SEASON IS NOT LOST. ALL REPORTS FROM DUCK U SAY THAT SPIRITS ON THE TEAM REMAIN HIGH, WITH NO SIGNS OF
A LOSS DERAILING THE REST OF THE SEASON.  A BCS BOWL GAME IS STILL POSSIBLE. IT IS TOO BAD WE HAVE AN EXTRA
WEEK TO THINK ABOUT THE UNFORTUNATE OUTCOME OF THE GAME, AND THE OPPORTUNITY LOST, BUT THAT IS ALSO AN
EXTRA WEEK TO PREPARE FOR THE WSU COUGARS AND HEAL SOME INJURIES. I BELIEVE THIS TEAM HAS THE CHARACTER
TO OVERCOME A LOSS, AND WILL FINISH THE SEASON STRONG.

THE PRICE OF VICTORY

Have Duck fans ever felt worse about a blowout victory in Autzen Stadium than they did after Oregon's
dominant victory over the Washington State Cougars Saturday afternoon?  The team played at a high level on
both offense and defense for the entire game.  Jeremiah Johnson turned an early Cougar turnover in to a
touchdown the first time Oregon's offense touched the ball.  That was followed by score after score for the Oregon
offense until finally the 3rd string Oregon team that was still out on the field at the end of the game rejoiced at the
final whistle and another resounding home win for the Ducks was complete.

But what cost comes with that win?  The end of Cameron Colvin's career as a Duck was the first payment.  Snaps
and pops on the field were drowned out by the noise of the crowd, but Cameron knew those nearly inaudible
sounds he heard would likely make that last reception his final as a Duck.  That injury exemplifies the brutal nature
of the game and the cruel twists of fate we all endure. Cameron, frequently thought of as a bust, in light of the
tremendous hype he came to Oregon with, was finally showing everybody that he was that great receiver he said
he was.  But as easily as the injury to Paysinger gave Cameron the opportunity to step up, now it does the same
for some other Ducklings.  I hope Cameron heals well and can continue on at the university as a student and
move on to a successful career beyond football.

When we pay our bills, it always seems that another is due even though we just mailed a check.  Jeremiah
Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game, and shortly after that his knee paid the ultimate price. A torn
ACL will sideline Johnson for the rest of this year and maybe next.  I have even heard rumors of a red shirt year
being possible for 2008.  Chip Kelly has answered our prayers and found a way to get all our best talent on the
field at the same time.  Johnson lined up as a wide receiver twice, motioned and took a hand off twice, and scored
on that play twice.  Johnson will wear a Duck uniform again, and will possibly be the feature back by the time that
happens, but the young man has a lot of hard work in store to rehabilitate that knee.  We will see if the offense
can use some of the younger backs in a similar fashion, but I expect we will see a lot more Jonathan Stewart the
rest of the year.

So we got a win. We are ranked 10 in the BCS and 7 in the polls. We all felt good about a big home victory over
the Cougars after traveling up to the Palouse for the past 10 years straight. But we paid with some great young
men's college football careers.

STORMTROOPERS BEATING DOGS

Did you see those Storm Troopers in that Dog fight Saturday night? Actually, that was just the University of
Oregon football team dressed in their new all white uniforms, including the white helmet.  I believe they wore the
white pants and jerseys against Cal, but the white helmet made its debut in Seattle against the Washington
Huskies. The results were much better than the Cal game, with the Ducks and Huskies keeping it close until the
4th quarter, when Oregon finally ran them in to the ground.

How crazy is this: Oregon loses a backup running back that could start for most other pac-10 teams  and go on
to set a new single game rushing record. If Dennis Dixon had gained 1 more rushing yard it would have been the
first time Oregon  had 3 men rush for 100 yards in the same game.  Jonathan Stewart  mentioned Jeremiah
Johnson  in interviews, and surely wishes he was still sharing the rock with him.  But could JJ's  injury lead to
more games like this, where Stewart is given the ball more, and does more with it, and solidifies his position as a
top ten pick in the next NFL draft? Probably.   Coach Bellotti said the chances of Stewart returning for his senior
year were 60/40 in favor of returning going into this year, and more like 50/50 now.  I would love to watch him in
Duck gear one more year, but I would not risk the injuries that could occur in his senior year and cost him
millions.

This week has a strange feel to it in Eugene.  We are told this is the first time Autzen Stadium has hosted a
football game between two teams ranked in the top ten.    Oregon is ranked higher  now than they were for the
game against California.  But the hype is not even close to what it was for Cal. Is Gameday that big of a factor?
Maybe.  Maybe that strange feeling is because next weekend's game against Arizona State could be even
bigger. I,for one, do not want to get into that looking ahead business. Did I just suggest that Oregon might look
past The University of Spoiled Children because we play the Sundevils next weekend? I am sure the players will
not make that mistake.

All hype aside, the two best teams in the Pacific ten conference are playing each other Saturday at Autzen
Stadium.  This game should determine who wins the conference.  I predict the Ducks get over the hump and win
by a score of 37-23.

The Next Biggest Game Ever

For the third time in 5 weeks, Autzen Stadium is set to host what may be the biggest football  game ever played
in Eugene.  For the first time in my life I think I understand the terms "trap game" and " a letdown after a big
game."  Gameday is coming back to Eugene.  It is the  first time ESPN's college football traveling circus has ever
gone to the same place in the Pac-10 twice in 1 year. The number 4 ranked Arizona State Sundevils bring a
perfect 8-0 record to Eugene  for the match up against  the number 5 ranked Ducks.  So where is the pregame
excitement that buzzed all week for The Cal and then the USC games?  Maybe 3 " biggest game of the year"
designations is too much for the fans.  I doubt that's it. It is More likely that most Oregon fans doubt the validity of
the  number 4 ranking ASU holds. Most fans I talk to are very confident Oregon will beat ASU. USC has been the
biggest obstacle for Oregon to get by so often in the past few years. Now that the Ducks have hurdled that
obstacle, it seems like the rest just has to fall into place.  I am sure coach Bellotti will do his best to make sure the
fans' naive thinking stays in the stands, but getting his team up for this game may be the coach's greatest
challenge of the year.

THE BYE PAYS AGAIN

For the second time this season, Oregon spent a Saturday watching football instead of playing.  But that
was good enough to gain another poll spot, leaving the Oregon Ducks as the second ranked football team in
the nation!  That matches the highest poll or BCS spot the program has ever achieved.  The last time was
2002, after the Fiesta Bowl victory.

The Ducks test their number 2 ranking Thursday night in Arizona.  The Wildcats would love to ruin the Ducks
shot at a national championship.  Arizona's coach, Mike Stoops, has said that Oregon is the Wildcats second
biggest rival next to Arizona State.  There are many reasons, form recruiting to old blowouts and sibling love to
general dislike.( Somebody needs to put a shock collar on those Stoops boys to keep them off the field.)
Oregon has reason to worry.  Everybody brings their best game when number 2 comes to play, so the Ducks
must take the Wildcats seriously.  Coach Bellotti has been able to avoid the trap games so far this year. That
counts ASU, which was ranked 5th, but most Oregon players and fans knew the Ducks were the better team, so
it counts as a trap. I am sure the coach will show the team all the experts picks, which seem to think Oregon is
ripe for an upset.

The only upset I see happening Thursday night is in my guts from excessive victory celebrations after
Oregon blows Arizona out. UO 48   UA   27
